The Music Tool is a rule-based melody generator, not an AI. It uses a seeded pseudo-random algorithm combined with music theory rules to produce melodies that are coherent, scale-correct, and shaped by the emotional character of your chosen vibe. Each vibe is placed on a valence arousal plane (the same model used in MIDI emotion-recognition research), and those coordinates steer note density, register, harmonic tension, dynamics and phrasing. There is no machine learning, no training data, and no neural network involved.

What is a MIDI file?
MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is a standard protocol for representing musical notes as data — not audio. A .mid file contains instructions: which note to play, when to start, how long to hold it, and how hard to press it. It contains no sound itself.
This means when you import a Music Tool MIDI into your DAW, it will be played back by whatever instrument you assign to it — a grand piano, a synth lead, a plucked string, or anything else. The melody is the same; the timbre is yours to choose.
MIDI files are small (a few kilobytes), universally compatible, and non-destructive — you can edit every note in your DAW after import.
Why does the MIDI sound different in my DAW?
The Music Tool previews use simple browser-based oscillators, sine waves, triangles, and sawtooth waves shaped with gain envelopes. They are functional but intentionally minimal. They are meant to let you hear the melody, not the final sound.
Your DAW instrument (a sample-based piano, a VST synth, a Kontakt library) will sound completely different — often far richer and more musical. The notes are identical. The sound is determined entirely by the instrument you load in your DAW.
How dynamics and emotion are modelled
Every note carries a MIDI velocity (1–127) that controls how hard it is struck. The Music Tool shapes velocity from four signals: an overall dynamic arc that swells toward the middle of the piece and tapers at the end, downbeat accents (beats 1 and 3 hit harder), the note's harmonic role (chord tones land heavier than passing tones), and the arousal of your chosen vibe.
Energetic vibes (Dark Trap, House, Retro Game) get punchier, wider dynamic ranges; calm vibes (Ambient, Sad Piano) stay soft and even. Phrases end with cadences that resolve to a stable chord tone — or, for tense vibes, deliberately suspend on a third or fifth. The result is melodies that breathe rather than march.
